Former judge Casey Moreland appeared in court briefly on Thursday after being arrested by the FBI on new charges.

Moreland was wearing shackles, jeans and a pullover top. He and his attorneys were clearly surprised that he had been arrested again.

The former judge is going to be held in custody until a detention and preliminary hearing is held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. the Federal Courthouse in downtown. He has been charged with tampering with a witness and destroying evidence.

The charges are related to monies that the government alleges were skimmed  from a court program called the Court Foundation Center.

The center’s director was Nan Casey. She has since resigned.

She was not named in the criminal complaint but is identified as a confidential source.

Federal prosecutors indicated they are planning to play tapes in court during Tuesday’s hearing.

The court documents indicated that conversations in January and February of this year between Moreland and the confidential source were taped.

In the court documents, it is alleged that the confidential source and Moreland discussed the informant lying to the FBI regarding documents that Moreland allegedly had her destroy last year.

Those documents concerned payments from court-ordered defendants that were made in cash and alleged to have been split and shared by Casey and Moreland.

Moreland resigned as judge in April 2017 after his arrest in March 2017 after a federal indictment.

A criminal complaint said Moreland conspired with a confidential informant to not only to bribe a witness but to have a police officer orchestrate a phony drug charge against her. Person 1 is not publicly identified but is believed to be Natalie Amos, the woman with whom Moreland had an extramarital affair.

Moreland was the subject of a News 4 I-Team report prior to his resignation as a general sessions judge.
