COLUMBIA, Tenn. (AP) - A Columbia pastor faces charges of raping a mentally disabled young woman from his ministry.
The Daily Herald reports that 68-year-old David Zeigler will be arraigned Monday. He is accused of raping a teenager who he knew was "mentally incapacitated or physically helpless."
Columbia Police Detective Cheryl MacPherson said a psychologist found the girl to have an IQ of 69 and an age equivalent of no more than 10 years old. MacPherson said the young woman, now 19, was determined not to be capable of granting consent for any sexual act.
The police report says Zeigler acknowledged a sexual relationship with the teen, but not before she turned 18. His attorney, Sam Patterson, said he could not comment because he has not had time to fully investigate the case.
